Building a winning team, written for Credit Collections & Risk February 2010

Maximising your team’s performance is a critical element of managing any operation. Having highly focussed, motivated and well-trained staff can mean the difference between success or failure.
So how do we achieve this?
The simplest way is to establish exactly what it is that staff want from their jobs. I suspect the answer to the question will include enjoyment, job satisfaction, the opportunity to progress, learning new skills, recognition for a job well done, and of course, reward. Depending upon the individual there will be different levels of importance attached to each. Our challenge as employers or managers is to provide all of the above, and most importantly to ensure our staff know that this support infrastructure exists.
Only by providing the environment for success and by getting our staff to appreciate it and to grasp the opportunities which exist, will we maximise performance. Practically speaking, this can be achieved in a variety of ways. At Red2Black Collections one of the core values which underpins the business is “Rewarding Excellence” and we achieve this in a number of ways. We provide the systems, support and infrastructure to allow our talented people to flourish and fulfil their long term potential. Our business performance relies on targeted incentive plans, significant investment in training and education, and providing the opportunities for internal progression. We place great importance on maintaining a fun working environment where the emphasis is on recognising outstanding performance. Recognition and reward of excellence are fundamental to gaining buy-in from staff at all levels to achieve our corporate goals.
Whilst there has been significant investment required to achieve this winning culture, the long term benefits for our business are clear. Reduced staff turnover, increased morale and overall improved performance at all levels ensures that we deliver exceptional results for clients, customers and management alike.
